JIM DALE
as “Charlie” Mr. Dale began his career as a stand-up comic in Great Britain and by 17 had become the youngest professional comedian in the British Music Halls. He joined the Royal Air Force and spent two years entertaining the troops in England and Germany. In his early 20’s he had a recording career as a pop singer. His records were produced by Sir George Martin, resulting in many Hit Parade entries during Britain’s ‘Swinging Sixties’. He became a member of the legendary British Carry On films, which catapulted him into celebrity. At the request of Laurence Olivier he joined the British National Theatre as a leading actor in 1969. He became one of the founding members of Frank Dunlop’s Young Vic, and he came to America in the hit show, Scapino. Perhaps Mr. Dale is best known here for his Tony-winning performance in Barnum on Broadway. This was followed by critical acclaim for roles in such shows as A Day in the Life of Joe Egg, Candide, The Music Man, Privates on Parade, Me and My Girl, Travels With My Aunt, The Invisible Man, Comedians, A Christmas Carol-the Musical, and The Threepenny Opera. In 2004 Queen Elizabeth awarded Mr. Dale the MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) for his work in promoting children’s literature. Currently, Mr. Dale can be heard as the narrator of the ABC TV hit show Pushing Daisies. Jim Dale holds a Tony Award, five Tony Award nominations, four Drama Desk Awards, four Outer Critics Circle Awards, five Drama League Awards and the Lucille Lortel Award. For his narration, Mr. Dale holds a record nine Audie Awards. As narrator of the entire Harry Potter audio book series he has won seven Audie Awards, including Audiobook of the Year, Best Children’s Narrator 2004,’05,’06, two Grammy Awards, six Grammy nominations and two Guinness World Records. As a lyricist he received an Academy Award nomination for the lyrics to the hit song, “Georgy Girl”
